Massimo Mangialavori is a homeopathic medical doctor and teacher who developed the Method of Complexity in homeopathic medicine.

Massimo was born in Naples in 1958, but was raised primarily in Milan and Modena. During his professional career as a homeopathic physician, he has maintained a practice in Bologna, and recently added a second clinic in Castel del Piano, near Mount Amiata. Additionally, he regularly provides seminars on his method and his materia medica throughout the world, especially in Europe and the United States.

After graduating from medical school, Massimo initially specialized in food science under the guidance of Professor Nino Battistini. His research at that time investigated the effects of fasting. A long-time interest in medical anthropology opened the door to in-depth exploration of traditional medicines. Eventually, he was introduced to homeopathic medicine and by 1985, decided to devote himself exclusively to that discipline.

Massimo initially explored different homeopathic teachers and approaches, but found his greatest satisfaction in studying intensively with his friend and colleague, Giovanni Marotta (Roma). This collaboration eventually inspired a new way of working called the Method of Complexity in Homeopathic Medicine, a model that has been shared with the international homeopathic community over the past twenty years.

The first public presentation of this method occurred at the invitation of Dr. Hans Zwemke (Berlin) and Dr. Cees Baas and Dr. Fernand Debats, among others at SHO (Netherlands). Since then he has taught regular courses through the Ulmus Association (founded in 1993 and closed in 2014); Koinè: Scuola di Formazione Permanente in Medicina Omeopatica (founded 2000), and Ianua Medical Amiata (founded 2014), which for years has worked closely with the school CIMI. Additionally, he has been the principal lecturer at the New England Homeopathic Academy (Boston) since 1996.

Massimo has given lectures at the following schools:

Previously, Massimo served as a member of the governing board of FIAMO (Federazione Italiana delle Associazioni e dei Medici Omeopati) for six years. A major focus during this time was, in consultation with other European schools, to develop guidelines and standards for Italian homeopathic medicine training programs.

In 1996 with Marion Meyemburg, Massimo helped to found ’DELPHI’, a project designed to collect and exchange homeopathic cured cases.

In 1998, 2003 and 2005, Massimo was a key speaker at the World Congress of the Liga Medicorum Homeopathica Internationalis.

In 1998, Massimo formed a research and supervision group with colleagues in Vienna, including Dr. Uta Santos Konig. This collaboration led to a paper entitled: “Homeopathic Families: 20 Remedies Coming Alive.”

From 2001 to 2005, Massimo conducted a three-year international postgraduate course of homeopathy simultaneously in Bologna and Boston.

In 2001, Massimo assisted Dr. Greta Hieromymus-Faust to publish lectures in German from the seminars held with David Warkentin in Augsburg, 1997. These were entitled: Klassische Homöopathie: Methodik & Arzneimittellehre, Vols. I and II.

In 2003, in collaboration with Dr. Giovanni Marotta, Massimo wrote a methodology text in Italian, subsequently translated into English and German entitled: PRAXIS: A New Method in Homeopathic Medicine. It details Massimo’s Method of Complexity, which describes remedies and patients in terms of coherent themes—mental, emotional and physical. This work includes a depiction of the homeopathic Drug family, whose varied membership is designed to emphasize the point that remedies from different taxonomic groups can coexist in the same family, while remedies of the same taxonomic group are not necessarily related homeopathically.

In 2004, in collaboration with Dr. Hans Zwemke, Massimo published Bitten in the Soul, which provided a materia medica of Spider remedies, including cured cases.

In 2005, in collaboration with Dr. Giovanni Marotta, Massimo conducted a postgraduate course in homeopathic medicine, in this case examining differential diagnosis through the lens of different clinical issues, physiological systems, human development, and other core themes in human experience. A similar program was conducted in Boston for NEHA (New England Homeopathic Academy) beginning in 2006.

In 2007, in collaboration with Dr. Betty Wood (Boston), Massimo published Solanaceae: A Nightmare between Light and Dark, providing a materia medica of some Solanaceae remedies along with cured cases.

From 2007 to 2009, at the invitation of Dr. Tom Withmarsh, Massimo directed a clinical supervision group at the National Health Service Homeopathic Hospital in Glasgow.

In 2007, Massimo was a keynote speaker at the conference entitled “Celebrating Links” in Heidelberg. He presented a lecture including cured cases on Oleum animale.

In 2008, in collaboration with Dr. Betty Wood, Massimo published Insecurity: A Homeopathic Perspective, a materia medica including cured cases of the Baryta and Alumina salts and other selected remedies known for insecurity.

In 2008, in collaboration with Marion Meyenburg and Ose Heimes, Massimo helped to design a comphrensive new website for homeopaths, homeopathic pharmacists and patients entitled Homeovision. This is one of the few internet sites to provide extensive scientific information on the field of homeopathic medicine.

Over a period of many years, Massimo worked closely with David Warkentin (San Francisco) of Kent Homeopathic Associates, assisting in the development of MacRepertory and Reference Works. At the same time, Massimo developed two Filemaker-based software programs: Consulta, a homeopathic medical record database allowing easy access to cured case information, and Tesi, a database designed to store important information about homeopathic remedies. Paolo Barbini has assisted in providing new up-to-date versions of these programs.

From early on in his practice, Massimo has collected an extensive number of verified symptoms from his cured cases, enough to assemble a substantial repertory that is continually updated and expanded.

In collaboration with his students and colleagues, Massimo has published numerous other works based on various seminars. Currently he is working on the first installments of his Materia Medica Clinica, which is organized according to homeopathic families.
